1 in 5 children in the US face the stress of hunger. The unemployment rate hovers near 8%, with the unofficial rate estimated to be above 20% if you include those that have given up looking for work. An oxycontin epidemic continues to kill our youth. Our government continues to spend and run excessive deficits that promise to be a burden to future generations.
In the Presidential debate, the topic of public spending on science was touched on briefly, with President Obama saying that he wants to use some of the money now being spent on war, to spend more money on basic science to keep America in the front of scientific and technology.
But at this time when people need job training and assistance, the US government is spending $3.4 million on a study to figure out how many times someone needs to go to a chiropractor to get their back rubbed to alleviate migraine headaches. Yes, your tax dollars are being wasted on this and other questionable projects as part of the massive, and what I consider a largely unaccountable, NIH budget, and nowhere is this clearer than in spending of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a part of the NIH that uses taxpayer money to fund studies on New Age therapies.
