On the outside, Tranquility Day Spa and Wellness Center looks like your typical salon. Inside, you’ll find all of the normal things places like theirs have, like hair products and stylists hard at work.
But look a little deeper and through the white doors you’ll be take a world away.
“I’m Lisa and this is Scott and we’re standing in the middle of a Himalayan Salt Cave,” explained Lisa Ramsey.
Yes, you heard right, a cave comprised of 15 tons of salt imported from the Himalayas sitting in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Scott and Lisa Ramsey built the cave nearly two years ago, and for good reason.
“This is one of the most healing places you can be,” commented Scott Ramsey.
The ground and walls are covered in the special salt, the lights are dim and soft instrumental music fills the air. According to the Ramseys, one 45-minute session in the cave is equivalent to three days at the beach.
“I noticed the very first night,” stated client Connie Yocum. “When I came out of there after 45 minutes I felt like I had been drugged.”
Connie Yocum is a regular at the salt cave. For her, it’s an alternative to medication for fibromyalgia.
“It was the best night of sleep I’ve had since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia back in 1994 and I’m like ‘whoa, there’s something to this!’,” Yocum explained to us.
After a year of regular visits to the salt cave, Connie says she’s now living pain free.
But it’s not just fibromyalgia the cave is said to help, snoring, allergies, skin conditions the list is extensive.
That list includes asthma, hay fever, countering effects of smoking and pollution, polinosis, hay rhinitis, neurodermatitis, nervousness, chronic lung diseases, ADHD, sleeping disorders, acne, relapsing pneumonia, frequent viral infections, bronchitis, congestion, atopic dermatitis, ear infections, snoring, poor concentration, ear nose throat conditions, sleep apnea, chronic tonsillitis, chronic disease of airways, weakened immune system, cystic fibrosis, lung hygiene, chronic/acute otitis, skin diseases, arthritis, thyroid gland disorders, allergies, eczema, sinuses, psoriasis and lung infections.
“It can provide an alternative if patients aren’t getting a full relief from their routine medications,” explained Dr. Paul Varahrami.
Dr. Paul Varahrami specializes in internal medicine. He strongly believes in the healing properties of the Himalayan salt cave, even recommending his own patients go.
“You’re absorbing essential minerals through the salt cave and that can provide positive results for some chronic diseases,” Dr. Varahami told CBS 21.
So our own Tanya Foster decided to give it a shot to see for herself.
When Tanya entered, she was feeling really tired. She had woken up with a little bit of a headache, so she was really curious how the salt care was going to work and how she would feel afterwards.
“I feel very good. Not as tired, but I feel relaxed,” explained Tanya after coming out. “I don’t have a headache anymore which is a miracle in itself because usually I have to take headache medicine regularly. But overall, I feel pretty good.”
We also talked to two other first timers, Diane Maiman and Beverly Marchick. Diane chuckled when asked how she felt, replying ‘tired and stressed out!”
Beverly stated she was tired and had been having dizzy spells, so she was hoping it would help with that.
Afterwards, they felt so much better, and really relaxed too.
But is it the salt that’s making us feel better, or is it all in our heads?
“The power of expectation can be a significant factor in overcoming a lot of things,” explained Psychologist Dr. Pauline Wallin. Dr. Wallin says studies have proven that when we prime ourselves to expect a certain outcome, many times that’s exactly what we get.
“You don’t even have to have a conscious expectation, if it’s happened before like Pavlov’s dog that salivated when it saw the technician come in, you can be conditioned to expect to feel better,” Wallin added.
Feeling better is what it’s all about.
“That’s what it’s done to me! I recommend it! You ought to be in there!” exclaimed Connie Yocum.
