Dauphin County Commissioners Jeff Haste, Mike Pries and George P. Hartwick, III, are urging citizens to prepare now for Hurricane Sandy, which is expected to hit the area late Sunday evening.  The National Weather Service is projecting that Dauphin County will get six to ten inches of rain and high winds and gusts.

The Commissioners say residents should be ready for power outages and flooding.  Governor Corbett has declared a statewide disaster emergency to enable state, county and municipal governments to respond effectively to the impact of Hurricane Sandy.  Dauphin County Commissioners urge residents to stay in their homes during harsh storm conditions.  If you must leave, please follow all posted road signs and warnings to keep yourself and others safe.

With the risk of prolonged power outages, Dauphin County Commissioners suggest preparing a kit that has three to five days worth of food, water, essential medicines, batteries and first aid supplies.

They also suggest these safety tips:
- Watch local news stations for weather information.
- If flooding happens, get to higher ground.  Get out of areas subject to flooding.
- Avoid areas that are already flooded.  Do not attempt to cross flowing streams.
- Roadbeds may be washed out under flood waters.  NEVER drive through a flooded roadway.  If your vehicle is caught in rising water, leave it immediately for higher ground.
- Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions.
- Be very cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
- During high winds, seek shelter indoors, move to a windowless, interior room, in a low part of the building, or take cover under a sturdy object or against an interior wall.

Report a power outage immediately by calling 1-800-DIAL-PPL or the online outage center at www.pplelectric.com/Outage+Center

Check the status of your power outage by:
- Visiting PPL's online Outage Center, or
- Calling the Urgent Response Service at (484) 634-3381.
