The defense attorneys for Graham Spanier say the charges are a political move by Governor Tom Corbett to hide his own failures from his investigation of Sandusky during his time as Attorney General.
Governor Corbett says there's no political motivation here, the only motivation is to keep children safe.
Former Penn State President Graham Spanier's lawyers claim that recent charges against Spanier were a desperate act by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett to hide his own failure to stop Jerry Sandusky.
Corbett was the Attorney General when the investigation into Sandusky initially started. In a press conference Friday morning, Governor Corbett dismissed those accusations.
“Defense attorneys are paid by their client to speak on their behalf,” Corbett stated. “And I hope they're getting paid well. Their comments are typical of what we've seen over the years. Aren't they?”
Governor Corbett used Bonusgate as an example, saying the defense attorneys claimed political motivation then too.
“The attorneys said much the same, it's politically motivated,” Corbett continued, referring to Bonusgate. “No it's not. It's a search for the truth. It's a search for justice.”
Corbett was also hesitant to answer a question about how he dealt with the Sandusky investigation as Attorney General.
“I don't think my personal opinion matters in this,” Corbett added. “I think the protection of the children, particularly matter and I think the action of officials or lack of actions of officials matter but that will all be decided in controversy.”
Corbett adds that he didn't tell Attorney General Linda Kelly to do anything and praised her for what she's done so far in the investigation.
