Two homes in Middletown, Dauphin County have been heavily damaged in an overnight fire.
According to the Middletown Fire Department, the fire was discovered after 3:30am by a woman living in 554 N. Spring Street. Her smoke detector woke her up and the fire chief says she came downstairs to find flames spreading. The two people living on the other side of the duplex, in 552, were woken up and told of the fire and they made it out safely as well.
Fire fighters spent over an hour fighting on several sides of the building. The fire was kept from spreading to nearby homes.
The chief says no one was hurt but four people are homeless. A Middletown fire investigator is on the scene looking into how the fire started but it does not seem to be suspicious.
The American Red Cross is assisting the residents who are not able to return to their home.
Middletown's fire chief says this fire is a perfect example of how smoke detectors save lives and urged anyone who didn't change their batteries over the weekend to do so.
