In small towns and major cities across the country, Americans paused today to remember the toil and sacrafice of our Nation's Veterans. In Carlisle, the tradition continued Monday morning where more than 100 people gathered to pay respect.
The end of World War I came at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. It was that day and month that ultimately became Veterans Day.
It's a time to recognize the service of the men and women of the the US Armed Forces.
The historic courtroom on the second floor of the old Cumberland County Courthouse in Carlisle was where Veterans Day was commemorated in Carlisle.
Local dignitaries joined Veterans, families and residents. A young choir provided patriotic music. Dirks Berry, who retired from the Navy in 1994, appreciates the meaning of Veterans Day. “It’s a time to celebrate service, country. It’s a time to celebrate the sacrifices that were made by the men and women who have served our country.”
The Commandant of the US Army War College delivered the message. Major. Gen. Anthony Sucolo told a story about a funeral he attended for Sgt. First Class Dave Metcalf, killed in Afghanistan. He watched as a 12-man firing and honors party of the 10th mountain division watched the vets who were there but didn't know Sgt. Metcalf, and he observed as each of the young combat Veterans hear the unspoken message.
“This time these young warriors heard it. And to them it was saying you are not alone. We have walked your path and we need you to walk for us. The survival of our nation depends upon a core of people willing to sacrifice everything so our nation will live on," Sucolo said.
