Information provided by Jones Geological Services:

Carroll Township has received a $5,000 grant from C-SAW (Consortium for Scientific Assistance) to conduct a groundwater survey of the township.  This project is scheduled to start in December, 2012 and will be a partnership with the United States Geologic Survey Pennsylvania Water Science Center in New Cumberland and Jones Geological Services of Spring Grove.  Goals for the project include locating active and abandoned wells; springs; wetlands and seeps; monitoring selected wells for hydraulic change; conducting water quality testing of selected wells and teach volunteers to use a GPS, read topographic and geologic maps and conduct well readings.  At the conclusion of this approximately 3 month project, a groundwater map and well database of Carroll Township will be created.

Area residents are being asked to become involved in this survey in several different ways as outlined below:

Volunteer to have their well used as part of the survey where water depths and/or quality testing

               will be conducted.

Volunteer information on the location of wells, natural springs or wetlands and natural seeps.

Volunteer to be a field assistant in locating wells or springs and conducting well surveys.

An orientation meeting is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the Carroll Township building.  USGS hydrologist Dennis Low and Jeri Jones will be providing information on the procedures that will be used for this survey, its goals and role of a volunteer.  Anyone interested in getting more information is invited to attend.

For more information or to volunteer prior to December 15th, please contact either Dennis Low at djlow@usgs.gov or call (717) 730-6356 or Jeri Jones at jonesgeo@comcast.net or call (717) 887-7103.
