If you go to see the movie "Lincoln" you'll see a piece of local history. Former Lancaster City Mayor Charlie Smithgall has quite an impressive Civil War cannon collection and as CBS 21's Ewa Roman reports, he allowed the makers of the movie to use them.
Charlie Smithgall's cannons are now famous. The former Lancaster City Mayor, allowed the cannons to be used in the recently released Steven Spielberg movie, "Lincoln."
Ewa Roman, CBS 21 News:
"12 of the former mayors Civil War cannons were used in the film and so was his historical knowledge."
Charlie Smithgall, Former Lancaster Mayor:
"They didn't know what guns they wanted exactly and I advised them that when Grant took over the army where the wilderness was leading up to Petersburg, he sent all the napoleans and pirates back and he kept just the three rifles."
His cannons appear in three scenes.
Smithgall:
"These are the two big guns that they wanted. The front one is a 30 pound parrot and a 4 inch rifle."
None of them were fired.
Smithgall:
"Oh yeah, it was a fun thing to do. Interesting to see how they set them up and how they do the special effects to make things work."
He says although it was very brief, he got a chance to meet Steven Spielberg. He didn't meet any cast members, but says he still had an amazing time on set.
As for the movie? He can't wait to see it.
