According to AAA, about 1.6 million Pennsylvanians plan to hit the roads today to begin their Thanksgiving travels.
"Expect to see a lot of cars on the road," said Shawn Kaup with AAA of Central PA. "90% of folks otu there are gone by traveling by car."
With more cars on the roadways, travelers can expect to find more delays in their commute to the holiday festivities. PennDOT's 511PA, Travel Info To Go website allows users to check their road conditions through incident reports and traffic cameras.
"You go to the website, you can also look at the traffic cames and you can also look at specific areas of the state you'll be traveling in," said Fritzi Schreffler with PennDOT. "And, it works in other states, too."
Pennsylvania State Police paln to step up patrols by including more sobriety checkpoints.
"Don't drink and drive," said Schreffler. "Make sure you put on your seatbelt everytime you get behind the wheel."
"Distracted driving is just as dangerous as impaired driving," said Kaup. "So put the cell phone away."
Meanwhile, Harrisburg International Airport expects more commuters than normal. Officials advise to show up about 90 minutes before their scheduled flight time.
"Print your baording pass out in advance, pay for your bags in advance," said Scott Miller, a spokesman with HIA. "That way when you can get here and everything is taken care of."
HIA says they plan to have more recreational and leisure travelers compared to the normal business commuters. With more familiies tralveing, Miller suggests parents take the time to talk with their kids so they understand the flying process. And, be prepared with their information and belongings ahead of time so they can travel with ease.
"That's the goal," Miller said. "Relax, be prepared, travel with a smile, and everything should be fine."
