Carlisle taxpayers told to send bills to alleged drug-dealer

Can it get any more confusing for taxpayers in Carlisle? A printing error on recent tax bills tells the payer to mail their payment to the wrong person and address.

The tax bill in question is the $5 dollar per capita tax. it was a reminder that the recipient was late in making payment and with the penalty, the bill is now $5.50.

The confusion began in August when Carlisle's elected Tax Collector George Hicks junior was arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover cop on two separate occasions. County District Attorney Dave Freed took the 21-year-old to court, not on the criminal charges, but on whether he should remain tax collector. The judge ruled he could retain the title and salary, but could in no way continue billing and collecting taxes till the end of his criminal case, those responsibilities were turned over to the Borough of Carlisle.

Then in September, a preliminary county audit revealed that as much as $20,000 in paid taxes is unaccounted for.

The current situation is not directly Hicks'; fault. when the county sent out the reminder it mistakenly told the taxpayer to make the check payable to hicks and mail it to his former office.

For the record, and until further notice, borough residents wishing to pay their municipal, county or school real estate or per capita taxes make the check payable to the Borough of Carlisle, then mail or deliver it to 53 West South Street in Carlisle.
