The product recalled is Veggie Patch Ultimate Meatless Burger, UPC 61012900211, 9 oz. with a sell by date of January 12, 2013.
The possible contamination is by listeria monocylogenes, which can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease. The disease rarely affects healthy people, but can cause high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea.
Listeriosis also causes miscarriages and stillbirths and has proved to be particularly dangerous for people who have weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, people with HIV or those undergoing chemotherapy.
Giant is not aware of any illnesses at this time. Anyone who has the product should get rid of it and take the receipt to Giant for a full refund.
