A Cumberland County Commissioner has a plan to cut property taxes by $700 dollars a year per homeowner. The hurdle is getting the General Assembly to approve it.
Cumberland County Commissioner Jim Hertzler wants to increase the state sales tax from six to seven percent. The additional money raised would be available to reduce the local, county and school district real estate taxes.
The commissioner says his proposal would raise an estimated $42 million dollars in Cumberland County. There are a little more than 60,000 properties on the tax rolls. Divide that into $42 million dollars. That equals about $700 dollars or the amount of savings per home owner.
Hertzler acknowledged previous tax reform efforts have failed. He calls his plan practical and simple. He says it's time to get something done.
Hertzler was a state Senate staffer, a township commissioner and a school board member. He doesn't want another decade or more of political rhetoric, more study and more talk.
Hertzler says he has the support of fellow commissioner Barbara Cross. He plans to reach across the river to his counterparts in Dauphin County. And he is attempting to meet with all members of the Cumberland County legislative delegation.
