Police are trying to identify the person who shot and killed a man Tuesday night in the kitchen of his home in south Harrisburg. According to reports, family members witnessed the murder.
The Dauphin County Coroner identified the victim as 35-year-old Luis Diaz of Harrisburg. A neighbor called him a good man
"It's pretty scary," commented Francesca DeLeon. "Makes you think it's unsafe for the children."
The Hoveter Apartments that front South 13th Street was extremely quiet Wednesday. Few people ventured outside, even fewer answered their door.
A front porch light remained on at 1114 Clovery Road, where the shooting occurred. In the back yard, laundry was hanging in the back yard.
City police said the shooting happened a little after eight o'clock Tuesday night. Apparently the incident followed a fight between Diaz and the shooter.
"I can tell you when you shoot a large caliber weapon at somebody, you're targeting him for something, for some sort of harm,” commented Coroner Graham Hetrick. “There were multiple gunshots. Four of them hit him. Was there intent to kill? Yeah. You're in a confined small kitchen. You're firing off a 40 caliber weapon at somebody. Your intent is to kill him."
Hetrick said one bullet struck Diaz in the head, a second in the chest. Three bullets were recovered and turned over to Harrisburg Police for ballistic analysis.
Francesca DeLeon, her husband and three children live in the complex. She was of the few residents out in the neighborhood Wednesday.
"I won't let them play outside,” DeLeon added. “’Cause it's not safe around here. And it's not the first time. Last time it was on the corner of 13th street."
Initially, police thought they would have a suspect in custody fast because there were witnesses. But the coroner said he thinks they have no one. A call to Harrisburg Police was not returned.
