This week, there have been two times where men have tried to lure a child into their van by offering candy. Fortunately, in both cases, police say the kids did the right thing and walked away.
Police are still looking for both men who tried to lure these kids into their vans. One happened in Lebanon County, the other was in Lancaster County.
In Lancaster County, Wednesday morning on East Willow Street, police say a white man between 30 and 40 years old used candy to try and persuade a middle school student in Elizabethtown to get into his red Dodge Ram van.
The boy was on his way to school. He ran home and the driver followed.
When the boy tried to make his way to school a second time, using a different route, the van appeared again.
That same evening, in Lebanon County, police say a very tall black man between 30 and 40 years old also used candy to try to do lure a 12-year-old child into his van in Palmyra.
Police say the van was white with black doors. The side windows were covered and the license plate was falling off.
The child said no and walked home. The driver followed.
Police say talk to your kids about stranger danger. If someone follows them they should get away as quickly as possible, either home or to a trusted neighbor’s house.
Children should be taught to remember a description of the person so they can tell police later.
And kids and parents should talk about any after school plans.
Some parents we spoke with have a few tips of their own.
"They should not be walking by themselves it's just too dangerous these days,” commented Mary Ann Wayne. “Parents have to be with them or they have to be in a group."
"Even if they tell you oh your mother's hurt I'll take you to your mother, never ever allow strangers to approach you," added Rhonda Wagner.
If you have any information about either of these two attempted child lurings, call police.
