One of the more recent additions to a cook's kitchen arsenal is a smartphone or tablet. When those cookbooks and recipe cards have become dog-eared and spotted with oil splotches, mobile apps serve up spotless meal ideas. Sure, you can search for recipes online, but apps often feature helpful photos, step-by-step videos, and reference tools.
Between all the stirring and dicing and rolling, sometimes you just wish you had a sous chef. Well, the mobile apps we suggest here can be that helping hand. One app in this collection will actually listen to you, unlike your overeager daughter who ices the cookies before they've fully cooled. With a simple voice command like "next" or "back," the app will read you the appropriate step in the recipe. And for the inevitable nights when your beef tenderloin looks more like a charred Yule log or the latkes are as dry as a pile of pine needles, we've got an app that will help you land a restaurant reservation that will please even the pickiest of in-laws. (We know this is a cooking and baking roundup, but who doesn't cheat a little around the holidays?)
Many of these apps also integrate interactive shopping lists so that you can be sure to stock your pantry with all the quarts of chicken stock you need. There's even a store locator for last-minute grocery runs when your shopping recruit picks up vegetable stock by accident.
Most of the selections in this story are free, while some cost a couple bucks—still a small price compared with the cost of a printed cookbook. Some are available only for iOS, but we were sure to include a handful for Android, as well as BlackBerry, webOS, and Windows Phone.
Now roll up your sleeves and get downloading. These 10 apps for cooking and baking will help you survive the season with finesse. Happy holidays!
