Friday night, many parents are looking at their children wondering what do I say.
First and foremost, grief experts say give your child a hug and tell them they are loved. Ask them what they know and if they have any questions.
Images like these where there is terror at an elementary school can create fear in children and make them wonder if the same thing will happen at their school.
Dr. John Kajic counsels families in grief at the Highmark Caring Place in Lemoyne. He says communication is key when it comes to children.
“You can have a conversation, how are you doing was there anything you heard,” Kajic explained to us. “There are a lot of things in the news, did you hear about it.”
He suggests a conversation that allows a child to talk about and express their feelings and concerns.
“Don't assume they're fearful,” Kajic stated. “They may just ask specific questions, so be concrete and don't overly elaborate.”
If you have children around you, just be aware of the power of the images Try to limit how much they see and hear.
