In wake of the school shooting last Friday in Connecticut, many are asking the question, should teachers be armed to help stop something like this from happening again?
This is not a new debate. But over the last week, it has taken on a new life.
The images from Sandy Hook Elementary and the emotions they sparked will remain etched in our memories. And as America talks about how to try to stop it from happening again, many topics are being discussed; gun control, mental illness and school security. And one of the main ideas concerning school security is; should teachers be armed?
Parents across the country and right here in Central PA are voicing their opinion on the idea.
Connie Dyer is a parent and a teacher, and she says she wouldn't want to carry a gun. “I wouldn’t want to be armed. Maybe somebody else in the building should be. But, I wouldn’t want to be armed as a teacher.”
Another parent, Cheryle McCain, doesn't think guns belong in school at all. “I don’t think they should be armed because I don’t believe in the gun thing, period.”
“Yes, I think that might be a great idea, to have a gun somewhere that is locked up and only maybe for the principal or someone else of authority,” said parent Karen Fogel.
Robert Passarella doesn't like the idea either. “I wouldn’t like it knowing I’m sending my kid to school and the teacher has a gun. What is the teacher snaps someday? You never know, the teacher might go off.”
“Well, the guns for the teachers definitely out. But maybe have some armed security,” said Frank Martin.
