The winter storm Wednesday made traveling a lot more difficult for people in Central Pennsylvania. Whether you were on the roads or in the air, there was traffic, and there were delays.
Wednesday, while we were driving around Harrisburg, traffic was at a standstill. It took over an hour and a half to get from Front Street in Harrisburg to Harrisburg International Airport.
For those who were flying into Harrisburg International Airport, it was a long day. The Head of Operations says 30 percent of flights were cancelled and another 60 percent of flights were delayed. This means 90 percent of flights did not arrive to the airport on time. About 85 flights in all were cancelled
“It was long. I’m tired, I’m sleepy, hungry,” complained Malcolm Tucker, who traveled from Florida to Harrisburg. “Trust me!”
That was the general consensus from many travelers today. With flights from all around the country being delayed or canceled, it was a longer trip home for the holidays than many wanted.
“Of course it is frustrating, cause we’re all supposed to meet at my sisters house earlier, and we’re like three hours late,” explained Theron Tucker.
The Tucker brothers from Florida were delayed for an hour flying into Harrisburg, but the longest wait is for their other brother to pick them up.
“My brother, he’s coming to pick us up from the airport and he got stuck in the snow, so we have to wait. We have to wait like an additional three hours for him to come.”
And while the waiting is stressful, it’s worth it to be with family.
“It could have went a little better, so it added a little stress, but as long as I’m here I’m good,” chuckled Theron Tucker.
While many were traveling today, others were waiting to pick family and friends up from the airport.
Arlene Starr’s friend’s brother-in-law’s flight out of Chicago O’Hare was canceled, and now she has to wait for him to catch another flight.
“It’s very frustrating to have these flights canceled when you’re sitting and waiting for someone and you’re wondering if you should go home and wait for them to call or stay through about three or four hours,” commented Arlene Starr.
Flights were delayed and canceled flying to and arriving from Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Cleveland, Newark and Las Vegas.
But as Arlene told us, it’s not just the airports that are affected by the storm, but the roads as well.
“I tried to go to see my mother today and I turned around and went back because the brakes went sliding down the hill,” Starr continued.
One other note is that flights that were cancelled Wednesday will not be at the airport on Thursday, which could lead to additional delays in the morning.
