U.S. Senator Pat Toomey praised the Senate’s passage of the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act.
He also praised an amendment he sponsored requiring the Defense Department to study the possible development of a joint service military history storage and preservation facility.
The Naval History and Heritage Command is responsible for the preservation, analysis and dissemination of U.S. naval history and heritage. Its library and archives are located in Washington, D.C.
A Navy report found that the collections are endangered due to poor facilities.
Sen. Toomey’s amendment requires the Department of Defense to study the feasibility of using excess capacity at military history entities across the Department of Defense to address storage and preservation inadequacies of military history collections.
“With its technological capabilities and knowledgeable staff, the Carlisle-based U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center is ideally suited to help the Navy better preserve its documents and history,” Sen. Toomey said. “I thank my colleagues for supporting this bipartisan measure, and hope this legislation will allow us to preserve our precious military history collections and educate future generations about the sacrifices our service members and veterans have made to protect our freedoms
