Nyes Road reopened

Nyes Road in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, reopened to traffic at about 3 o'clock this morning. It had been closed between Taunton Road and North Highlands Court since July 9 for construction work to build a gabion wall – which is essentially rectangular wire baskets filled with rock and positioned and connected to form a wall – to help provide lateral support to the roadway and prevent erosion by the stream running parallel to Nyes Road.

The installation of the gabion wall is part of a larger project that includes the repair and resurfacing of portions of Nyes Road between North Highlands Drive and Old Jonestown Road and farther south the section between Willoughby Road and Route 322. J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pennsylvania, is the contractor hired by PennDOT to conduct the highway improvement project at a cost of $2,177,046.

The contractor will soon move its operation to the overnight hours for milling (i.e., removing the old blacktop surface of the road) and paving a new asphalt surface. The overall project is scheduled to wrap up by the end of October.
