Silver Spring Township Police have identified the suspect involved in the hit and run crash that knocked a fire hydrant off its location.

The accident occurred on Monday morning when a tractor trailer hit the fire hydrant around 630 a.m. and then fled the scene.

The fire hydrant’s internal parts were badly damaged. However, United Water was able to fix it and place it back in service.

No one lost water service, despite almost 200,000 gallons of water leaking.

When fire hydrants are damaged, water is lost at a high rate. During winter, this water can freeze, creating dangerous conditions on streets and sidewalks.

Tampering with a fire hydrant is a federal offense and it is important that if you accidentally damage a hydrant you report it to emergency officials as soon as possible.
