Dauphin County Commissioners and the county’s Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) are recognizing the month of September as “National Preparedness Month” to encourage citizens to be prepared for disasters and to register for a free emergency notification service, South Central Alert, to receive critically important and timely emergency-related information.

“One of the many lessons that Tropical Storm Lee, which devastated our region one year ago, has taught us is that people need to know when to evacuate, where to go and how to stay safe,” said Commissioner Mike Pries, who has oversight of the county’s Emergency Management Agency. “Now, citizens who live or work in Dauphin and surrounding counties can register for South Central Alert and receive potentially life-saving information by phone, text or e-mail. It only takes a few minutes to register your contact information, and best of all, it’s free.”

South Central Alert, which is operated by the South Central Task Force, provides notifications regarding emergency incidents or imminent health or safety threats, such as severe weather, evacuations, missing persons, boil water advisories, natural gas leaks, wildfires, road closures and other incidents, to residents and businesses within the following eight counties: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties.

To receive these emergency alerts, residents should register online at www.sctfpa.org and follow these simple steps:

Select the type of alerts you wish to receive,
Enter one or more locations, such as home, school or work, and
Select the types of alerts that you would like to receive, such as text, e-mail or cell phone messages, and set the order of priority for each type.

A paper registration form is also available at county emergency management offices. To obtain a paper registration form, please call Dauphin County Emergency Management Agency at 717-558-6800. All registration information is maintained on a secure server and will not be distributed or shared with other organizations or individuals.

Residents and businesses with landline phone numbers that are listed in the White or Yellow Pages will be notified of emergencies. Citizens with unlisted landline and cell phone numbers will not receive alerts without registering.

“Individuals who do not have computer access or have questions about signing up for South Central Alert can get assistance from our helpful emergency management agency staff who will host two outreach events in conjunction with the Dauphin County Library System ,” Commissioner George P. Hartwick, III said. “No need to make an appointment. Just stop by and ask for help.”

The following two outreach events have been scheduled:

Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 8p.m. at the Elizabethville Branch Library, 80 N. Market St., Elizabethville, and
Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the East Shore Area Library, 4501 Ethel St., Harrisburg.

“Help protect yourself, your friends and your family members by registering today,” said Commissioner Jeff Haste. “South Central Alert will quickly notify you of emergency situations and provide timely instruction and information in a crisis, no matter where you are.”
