When the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show was cancelled, it caused some shock waves. But now a local radio station plans to use its airwaves to bring a similar style show to the area.
WQLV Owner Ric Cooper calls it, The American Outdoorsman Sport Show. He says it will be a common sense sportsman expo, recognizing the rights of every U.S. Citizen. "The initial response team came up to me and said hey prez, what'ya think if we just try something and if we get enough likes, what if we put on a sports show when the Eastern Sports and Outdoors Show announced they were cancelling."
But Cooper says WQLV listeners called in and weren't so happy. "The morning personalities were fielding phone calls from fans who were very upset."
Thats when the owner of the Millersburg radio station decided to host a show of his own, but not a radio show, The American Outdoorsman Show.
Cooper says it's not about the weapons, its about the sportsmen. "It's not just about guns, it's an outdoorsman show. It's about the hunters, fisherman."
The Eastern Sports and Ooutdoors Show was cancelled because of conflicts with banning assault-style weapons, but Cooper says its a bigger issue than that. "People will attend the sportsman show. People and vendors feel greater cause they're not letting someone tell them what they can and cannot do."
Almost 30 vendors already signed up and Cooper says the list is growing. He says vendors who focus on fishing and outdoors and vendors who focus on weapons will be at the show. "Were not banning them, the only reason there won't be A-R's at this show is if our gun dealers sell out of them.
Organizers hope this also will help boost the economy. "It's not just the hotel money. It's the local merchants here they would have been displaying at the show."
The show also has gotten national sponsorship from the American Outdoorsman TV Channel.
The show is set for March 21-24th at the Carlisle Expo Center.
