The Navy plans to do the unthinkable to make up for a more than $8.5 billion dollar budget shortfall caused in part by sequestration.
The Navy had planned to shut down four air-wings, delay deployment of a ship, and cancel some aerobatic aerial shows. But Navy Secretary Ray Mabus now says the cuts will go much deeper.
The Washington Guardian, our investigative media partner, obtained Mabus' memo to Navy managers.
Mabus explains he'll delay the deployment of several unnamed ships and a scheduled humanitarian trip by America's premier medical ship, the USNS Comfort, has been postponed.
The Guardian's Phillip Swarts says most of the savings will come from one area.
“A lot of the money is going to have to come out of every day maintenance cuts for the Navy,” Swarts said. “It's going to leave a lot of ships docked in their home port."
Some republicans want to restore about seven billion dollars to the Navy's 2013 budget. You can read more about that by going to our website and following the link to the Washington Guardian.
