Study indicates sharing secrets, long hugs are sign of cheating

A new study reveals some of the truths about infidelity.

More than 400 students at Midwest Universities were asked what they considered cheating.  The study done by the University of Michigan revealed most people believe having sex with someone other than their partner is considered cheating, but others had some surprising answers.

CBS 21 talked to some couples to ask them what they would consider cheating.

"Any time you're with somebody else that's not your spouse, you know or your significant other.  That's cheating" Said Sheryl Rain of Lower Paxton Township.

Dana Trapuckd said she considers a few things cheating.  "I consider anything cheating.  Kissing, hanging out with another woman without the consent of significant other."

"Emails?  Yeah, if they're talking about innapropriate things I consider anything in that nature cheating."  Said Derick Figueroa of Lower Paxton Township.

Robert Richards said going out with another person that's not your significant other is considered cheating.  "Going out with another girl, that's not your significant other? Yeah, exactly."

Alicia Snyder agreed with Robert.  "I would probably say the same thing, going out with another guy when you're supposedly in a committed relationship"

The study polled 456 students at two Midwest Universities. The students were asked to rate behaviors, they considered to be cheating, on a scale from 0-100.  On the scale, 100 is equal to full-fledged infidelity.

Here are some of the results of the survey:

• Kissing on the lips was ranked at 88
• Emailing naked pictures was also ranked at 88
• Sexting was ranked at 82.6
• Going out to dinner was ranked at 41.4
• And hugging for more than 10 seconds was ranked at 34.5

Researchers also looked at people who are insecure in their relationships and some of them said they actually consider sharing secrets as cheating.
