A mother talks to CBS 21 News hoping to clear her son's name.
Friday, police served a warrant at Skyler Stewart's home in Lower Paxton Township.
He ran from police causing a short chase, Stewart was shot and killed.
The Dauphin County Coroner found three bullets in his body. Stewart was involved in a stabbing the day before, which is why cops were looking for him in the first place.
Skyler's mother, Brenda, doesn't want people to think her son is a bad guy. She says he just made a bad decision.
“I don't justify what my son did was right, but it's how you treated him after the fact, because no body knows the whole story,” explained Brenda Stewart, Skyler Stewart’s mother in this exclusive interview.
Brenda Stewart is now sharing her story of what happened leading up to her son’s death. She says Thursday night, her son Skyler fought with her on-again, off-again boyfriend.
“Went after Skyler more or less,” Stewart told us. “I tried to get in the middle and ultimately all of us ended up down the steps, it went on for a while. I remember saying, please leave, please leave, everybody is screaming please leave.”
The next day, police went looking for 20-year-old Skyler Stewart, but he ran, leading them on a short chase.
“It wasn't good judgment and I know that,” his mother continued.
What she doesn't know is why her son had a gun. The same gun he allegedly used to shoot a K-9 during the chase.
She says the dog bit her son in the arm and leg, before he shot the K-9, wounding him in the neck.
“Skyler is one of the most gentle people you would ever meet,” his mother said.
Police believe that after Skyler shot the dog, an officer opened fire, hitting Skyler, who was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died.
A helicopter transported the dog to an animal clinic.
“It's just wrong, it's wrong. You are going to helivac a dog, the helicopter is off the ground, but my son is just laying there?” questioned Brenda.
Officials say where the shooting happened was only 8 miles from a hospital, and it would have been quicker to take him by ambulance.
Brenda saw her son's body, for the first time Wednesday.
“I touched him head to toe. Kissed his feet. That was my baby,” Brenda admitted.
You can see the pain in her eyes, as she replays moments from that day, ones she'll never forget.
“Don't know. I still don't know how to feel some time,” Brenda commented. “I have a lot of people who love Skyler and support him and are helping me through this.”
The coroner is calling Skyler's death a homicide, which means he was killed at the hands of someone else. The District Attorney is investigating to determine if the officer's actions were justified.
