Officials at state parks in Cumberland and Perry counties are warning visitors to lock their cars before heading into the mountains and lakes.

It was just last month that police in Carlisle and surrounding communities were investigating a rash of overnight vehicle break-ins in residential neighborhoods. In many cases, the cars were unlocked. Thieves took money, electronic gear and even firearms.

State Police the new targets are vehicles at Little Buffalo State Park. Near Newport, Perry County and Col. Denning State Park North of Newville in Cumberland County. The most recent incidents happened Wednesday, but police have break-ins as far back as early August.

Troopers say the break-ins typically happen in the afternoon or early evening.  The thieves smashed windows and stole credit cards, check books, driver's licenses and other valuables.

Joe Brothers, visiting the area from Canada, knows how to take care of himself when bicycling in the woods.

Joe Brothers, Canada:
"You can never be too safe. You want to protect your person. Beware of your surroundings is probably the best advice I could give. Stay alert and be vigilant.

"Common sense isn't common is one of the things my grandfather use to say.  Just stay safe.  Be aware of your surroundings."

State police say visitors to state parks should plan ahead. Leave valuables at home or take them with you. And if you see anything suspicious, dial 911.
