Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it will hire roughly 50,000 seasonal workers during the holidays and increase hours for its regular staff during the key season.
The number is slightly higher than the number of employees hired last year, according to a company spokesperson, who declined to give a specific seasonal staffing number for 2011.
"This is our busiest time of the year and we are focused even more on providing excellent service to our shoppers throughout the holiday season. One way we do that is by ensuring our stores are adequately staffed by our associates," said Chief Operating Officer Gisel Ruiz.
Holiday hiring can be an indication of a retailer's expectations for seasonal traffic. Overall, retail executives are projecting a holiday sales season similar to last year's.
