Many Pennsylvanian’s have given their lives to protect our country, and this weekend we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

One of the biggest and most historic cemeteries in our area will be debuting a new memorial this weekend.

Prospect Hill Cemetery has veterans buried from every war our country has ever fought in, starting with the Revolutionary War.

This Memorial Day weekend, the cemetery is displaying special memorials to honor those who have lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Friday, Prospect Hill Cemetery and Cremation Gardens made its final preparations for Memorial Day weekend.

The more than 2,000 flags have been blowing in the wind since April, and standing in the middle of it all is the Fallen Heroes Memorial.

"It seemed entirely appropriate for us to create a memorial here to honor these new patriots," explained Prospect Hill Cemetery Managing Partner Jack Summer.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial allows the public to see pictures of the over 6,600 service people who have lost their lives in Iraq or Afghanistan.

New this holiday weekend, a special floral tribute will be on display.

"We have a floral designer who has created a custom floral display to honor veterans, and particularly those who made the supreme sacrifice," Summer told us.

Sponsored by a grant from the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation, Sara Knudson created a floral display with 400 roses to honor veterans.

"I was so excited to be part of this because my grandfather flew 53 combat missions over Germany, my dad is a Vietnam vet,” stated Knudson. “I've always really cared about veterans and making sure that we say thank you appropriately."

The floral arrangement took more than 100 hours to make, but Sara says it's all worth it for this special weekend.

"Just taking a moment to remember and to be grateful," reminded Sara.

The display will be up throughout the weekend at Prospect Hill Cemetery in North York and Manchester Township.
