In response to the Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, Penn State Hershey Medical Center formed the Center for Protection of Children. The center is devoted to preventing and treating child abuse.
The Center for Protection of Children was formed last December. Since then the center has grown to be a leader in the education and prevention of child sex abuse in Central Pennsylvania.
The center is located at Penn State Children's Hospital in Derry Township and focuses on preventing child abuse, improving reporting processes, providing care for victims of child abuse and improving society's ability to protect children.
The center draws on research and expertise throughout Penn State in areas including medicine, law, law enforcement, education, and social work.
The leader of the program says that he's amazed at how people have responded after the Jerry Sandusky scandal by working together.
"Breaking down barriers that often divide people and recognizing that this has to be a community effort and that everyone has to help,” stated Dr. Benjamin Levi, the head of the Center for Protection of Children at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. “The willingness of people at all levels in this institution to contribute to a solution has been nothing short of astounding."
The center has many resources for victims of child sex abuse and for those who are looking for more information, including websites that tell you the best way to report child sex abuse.
