UPDATE:
Criminal charges have been dropped against an 18-year-old Carlisle man accused of groping a female juvenile in a local park. The alleged victim has admitted she lied to police and in court testimony.
Shane Winters met a 15-year-old girl in Thornwald Park in Carlisle two weeks ago. Next he found himself facing criminal charges for allegedly assaulting the girl.
At a recent preliminary hearing, the girl told a judge that Winters had attacked her at Thornwald Park. She also accused him of groping her against her will until she was able to escape.
"Apparently that version of her testimony did not agree with what she told family members and they confronted her after the preliminary hearing at which time she confessed that she made up 95 percent of her story," explained Carlisle Police Detective Daniel Freedman.
Winters confessed his innocence at the time of his arrest and again during the preliminary hearing, calling the girl a liar. Freedman says Winters must now live with being falsely accused of a felony crime.
"Even as an innocent person once you're fingerprinted that is on your criminal history,” Freedman added. “He's going to have to worry about getting expungements so they don't show up to employers. 13:28:08
The 15-year-old girl who wrongly accused Winters now faces criminal charges herself. Her case will go before juvenile court accused of false reports to police and unsworn falsifications to authorities.
