The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced in a press release Wednesday, that a 27-year-old St. Clair resident, who was employed as a 7th and 8th grade teacher at the St. Clair Elementary/Middle School for several years, was sentenced today
by Senior U.S. District Court Judge James M. Munley to serve 144 months in prison for trafficking in child pornography.

According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, the defendant, Todd Evans, previously pleaded guilty to downloading and trading child pornography between October 2011 and December 7, 2011.

Evans was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2011, as a result of an investigation by special agents from the Department of Homeland Security, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Office.

In imposing sentence, Judge Munley noted the horrible and sickening nature of the crime, explaining that Evans’ conduct in downloading, viewing, and distributing child pornography helped to perpetuate a market for the sexual abuse of children.

Judge Munley also ordered that Evans be placed on supervised release for life after serving his prison sentence, and pay a $500 fine and a special assessment of $100. Evans will also be required to register as a sex offender and comply with the requirements of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
