PennDOT District 8 announced Thursday that preparatory work begins Oct. 15 on a project to repair and resurface a five-mile section of Route 340 from Route 462 in East Lampeter Township through the villages of Bridgeport, Smoketown and Bird in Hand to North Ronks Road in Leacock Township, Lancaster County.
The $3,402,243 contract was awarded on May 17 to New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc., of New Enterprise, Bedford County, and includes drainage improvements, roadway base repair, curb cut work required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, roadway and shoulder resurfacing, guiderail and sign installation and new traffic lines.
PennDOT advises those travelling Route 340 that initially they may encounter daytime lane restrictions this fall between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone as crews repair the roadway in preparation for resurfacing next summer.
Work under this construction contract is scheduled to be completed by the end of Sept. 2013.
Sections of Route 340, known as Old Philadelphia Pike, average more than 15,000 vehicles traveled daily.
