A new baseball field in Harrisburg will help get kids off the street and give them a place to grow and learn.

A new field is coming to town and the family of a baseball legend is helping out with the cause.

Thursday, local officials joined Billy Ripken in breaking ground at the future site of a brand new ballpark in Harrisburg.

"Who's ready to build a baseball field in Harrisburg?"

The Cal Ripken Senior Foundation and Ollie's Bargain Outlet have joined together to build the $1.2 million dollar baseball field.

The field will be a part of the Boys and Girls Club of Central Pennsylvania Youth Development Park off Berryhill Street in Harrisburg.

Mayor Linda Thompson and members of City Council attended the groundbreaking, agreeing that it's a great day for Harrisburg and that projects like this one show that we really care about our cities' future.

Baseball legend Billy Ripken was at the event representing the foundation set up in his father's name. He says while the baseball field will be a great place to play America's pastime, it will also be a place for kids to grow and learn.

"We are a baseball group, the Ripken family, so we're going to have a baseball entity to it,” explained Billy Ripken. “But it's not about building big league baseball players, it's about kids enjoying a safe place to play, it really is.”

The field is expected to be finished in the spring, at which time the Ripken Foundation will work with The Boys and Girls Club to create programs to engage at-risk youth.
