Police say that around 4:40 Saturday morning, they were called out to the area of 5th and Walnut Streets in Lebanon City for shots fired. When they arrived, witnesses pointed to a pit bull that had been shot dead in the street near that area.
" I heard one shot and I looked out my window and seen two kids with a gun shooting a dog and I quickly came downstairs to make sure, the dog wasn't hurt. I went over and seen the dog laying there. It just wasn't right," said Jeri Angelo, witness.
So far, the investigation reveals that there was an argument at a home at the 500 block of Walnut Street. It spilled outside. Then shots were fired.
" We actually looked out the window in time to see the car and the kids were running to the getaway car and we watched them take off," said Stephanie Wagner, witness.
Witnesses say some of those kids came back to that area in the getaway car. Police question them and when they found the BMW seen speeding away from the scene, they also found a .45-Taurus handgun.
Police charged the driver, 19 year old Kevin Baez from Reading, with illegally having a firearm without a permit, disorderly conduct and firing a gun in the city. But it's unclear if he's the one, who actually shot the pit bull.
People who live there say they're upset the dog was killed. But they're also upset with police. They say it took them about three hours to remove the dog from the sidewalk.
" And then, when they finally did get the dog, they were thinking about throwing it in the dumpster," said Stephanie.
" We felt like we should have buried the dog, because I'm sorry, animals are like children to us," said Jeri.
Baez, the man charged in this case, is in Lebanon County Jail. His bail is set at $20,000.
The shots fired and dead pit bull are still under investigation.
