Almost one hundred prisoners are getting a get out of jail free card. They are being furloughed for three days so the prison can take care of a bed bug infestation.

These are the work release prisoners, because of the bed bug problem they are being sent to stay at home or with friends for three days. County leaders stress these are low-risk inmates.

Roughly 90 of the 140 or so work release male inmates will be freed Thursday thru Sunday to allow the trailers they stay in to be sprayed for bed bugs.

County leaders say the bugs were likely brought into the trailers by inmates, they were first alerted two weeks ago.

“What we found is bed bugs more widespread than we originally believed,” explained Carl Lindquist, York County Spokesperson.

Lindquist wants to let the public know the inmates who will be released are low-risk and minimum security prisoners.

“Folks being released may have been convicted for DUI and driving with a suspended license or minor theft charges,” Lindquist relayed.

Their work release designation means they can already come and go from the prison, the only difference now is they'll be out for three nights.

“Generally speaking, they are already out in the community working,” Lindquist continued. “They have been approved by a judge and have gone over night for personal events.”

Until Thursday morning, prisoners are forced to tolerate the bugs. Lindquist says they are following the Center for Disease Control’s direction.

Prison leaders are working to make sure the men have somewhere to go. They'll face bench warrants if they don't return.
