A bombshell for the Boy Scouts of America as twenty years worth of secret files on men suspected of child sex abuse in the organization now open for the public to read. We're learning some are from Central PA.
The Oregon Supreme Court ordered the release of the "perversion files."
They contain names of over 1200 scout leaders and volunteers accused of child sex abuse between 1965 and 1985.
The Boy Scouts say the purpose of the files was to keep child molesters out of the organization. But abuse victims say the documents didn't protect them.
“I do want to speak for all the victims that can't speak,” stated an emotional Tom Stewart. “Scouting does have some good points. However, right now it's a very dangerous program for young boys.”
The Boy Scouts of America President admits the organization did not do enough to prevent abuse.
They now use computer background checks on all volunteers. As we said, a number of people on that list are from our area.
