One of the most recognized buildings in Hershey may be demolished

The Hershey Company could have plans for the partial demolition of one of its oldest factories. The factory we're talking about is probably the most recognized for its stacks. The future of the site could be made public this Monday.

It's as Hershey as a chocolate kiss, the old factory on East Chocolate Avenue.

Looked down on by two Hershey towers and welcomed by flower beds touting the towns largest company.  The factory may be nostalgic, but it's not fully functional.

That is about to change, and the changes will be laid out at a Derry Township design review board meeting Monday.  The Hershey Company filed a demolition petition for a portion of the old factory.

Company leaders won't comment on specifics about their plan, or what will be knocked down.

But previously, the company has said they plan to eventually house about 1000 employees in the western wing.

Milton Hershey himself played a role in the buildings design and architecture, but the Hershey Company no longer even owns it.

Hershey is leasing the building from a company that bought the structure last year in a million dollar deal. That sale, as part of the contract, says the towers and the Hershey Cocoa flower beds must stay.

The hearing meeting is scheduled for Monday at 6 at the township offices.
