STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Student organizers of the annual Penn State dance marathon say they've raised $12.37 million for pediatric cancer research and care, shattering last year's record by nearly $1.7 million.

The IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon is billed as the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Students have now raised more than $100 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital since 1977.

The event, commonly known as THON, requires more than 700 participants to stand on their feet for 46 hours, supported by thousands of volunteers. Pediatric cancer patients and their families also attend the event that takes over the Jordan Center basketball arena.

The festivities ended 4 p.m. Sunday. Weary, sleep-deprived dancers stayed motivated with party songs, pep talks and emotional meetings with cancer patients.

A family is in after a early morning fire killed two people and sent three fire fighters to the hospital.

Early Monday morning, a fire tore through a home on the 200 block of E. Madison Street in Lancaster, Anthony Smith and Scott Geiter lost two family members.  "It sucks. We lost two people too early.  It's not fair." Smith said.  “Knowing that I can’t call her when I’m having a bad day. You have her one moment and then you don’t have her the next and you lose a little kid.”

The coroner has not released the names, but Smith and Geiter say the woman who died was 38-year-old Pauline Stone. The other victim, a six-year-old girl, was her niece. Her brother, Bill Stone and his 13-year-old son escaped the blaze.

The adults lived in the home, the children were visiting for the weekend.

Scott Geiter, the victim's brother-in-law says he thinks of her as a hero.  “I call my sister-n-law a hero, because she got away from the fire and almost made it out of the house, but the smoke inhalation took their lives.”

Geiter says his sister-in-law died with her arm around her niece, as if she protected her until the very end.

Three firefighters, Craig Robertson, Tom Bender and Andre Kelly were injured and hospitalized. Kelly is at the Chester-Crozier Medical Center in critical condition.

“They went in there to risk their lives and save two people with no help. I just have the utmost respect for those two firefighters. They are heroes to our family.” Geiter says.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. But there has been some controversy surrounding this incident.

The family says that when firemen arrived the fire hydrant was dead and no water came out of it.

Fire Chief Tim Gregg says they experienced no lack of water that impaired their ability to fight the fire.

Interstate 83 to close at 11 p.m. for several hours into Tuesday in the area of the Lowther Street Bridge

Information provided by PennDOT:

The closure will take place so that construction crews can safely set bridge beams for the new Lowther Street Bridge over I-83 in Lemoyne.

Traffic on Lowther Street is currently using a temporary bridge to cross over I-83 while a new bridge is built.

PennDOT advises motorists traveling I-83 and Route 581 in Lemoyne that Feb. 18-19, weather permitting, they will first encounter a single-lane restriction in each direction at 9 p.m. followed by an overnight detour between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. as crews set the remaining bridge beams into place over I-83.

This work is part of a nearly $8 million contract that was awarded in March 2012 to Susquehanna Valley Construction Corporation of New Cumberland, Cumberland County, and includes: installation of a temporary bridge, removal of the original Lowther Street bridge, and construction of a new two-span bridge large enough to accommodate four lanes of mainline I-83 as well as three ramps underneath with 20-feet 10-inches of vertical under clearance.

I-83 North will be directed off at Brandt Avenue, turn right onto Lowther Street through Lemoyne back to I-83 North. I-83 North traffic headed to Route 581 West will also follow Brandt Avenue to Lowther Street and continue on I-83 North across the Susquehanna River into Harrisburg and be directed off at Exit 44-A for 13th Street to I-83 South back across the Susquehanna River to Route 581 West.

I-83 South will be directed off at Exit 42 for Lemoyne follow Lowther Street over the interstate, turn left at 10th Street and back to I-83 South.

Route 581 East traffic headed to I-83 South will be directed to I-83 North to Exit 41-B for Highland Park, turn right onto Lowther Street through Lemoyne over the interstate and turn left at 10th Street to I-83 South.

The original single-span concrete bridge that carried Lowther Street over I-83 was built in 1952 and was considered functionally obsolete. That structure was a major contributing factor to the bottleneck on I-83 North approaching the City of Harrisburg and Route 581 West.

PennDOT expects work on the new Lowther Street Bridge to be completed by the end of May 2013.

For more information on the Lowther Street bridge replacement project over I-83 in Lemoyne go to www.penndot8.com.

Lancaster firefighters rescue one of their own after floor collapses

Communication of firefighters and other emergency personnel is important, especially in critical situations.

Monday morning, a blaze in Lancaster proved to be intense and scary for firefighters after one of their own called for help.

Around 4:30 Monday morning, Lancaster City firefighters responded to the call of duty.  "Lancaster City, East 225 East Madison Street.  A dwelling with possible entrapment," came over the scanners.

Crews rushed to the home and found smoke covering the block.  Shortly after arriving, officers knew something was wrong. "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday," came across the scanner.

The first report was of people trapped in an upstairs bedroom.  But crews soon learned, it was one of their own that needed rescued, "Bring your crew up here, initiate search for down firefighter, second or third floor."

Tim Gregg, Lancaster City Fire Chief, said crews heard a the firefighters call for help over the scanners. A firefighter can be heard shouting: "He was on the second floor at the top of the stairs, he was yelling for help."

At one point, parts of the building collapsed, the second floor fell onto the first.  It became apparent the blaze was too dangerous to fight, and crews were called back. "Do we have any forces inside the building? I want everybody out!"

Gregg said it's been a while since they've been in this situation. "It's been quite a few years since we had a firefighter injured like this on duty."

But Kelly wasn't the only firefighter injured, two other firefighters were injured too.

Two of the injured firefighters were rushed to Lancaster General Hospital.  But as for firefighter Andre Kelly, he was flown to Crozier Chester Medical Center outside of Philadelphia with second and third degree burns.

Shooting outside after hours club in Harrisburg raises safety concerns about another block

Police make a murder arrest in Harrisburg, after a violent week left three people dead.

The arrest was made within 24 hours of the shooting. It happened right across the street at an after hours club.

Meanwhile, other business owners say continued problems in the area and violence are frustrating.

18-year-old Corey Reid of Steelton is locked up, charged with killing 30-year-old Matthew Dyson early Sunday morning.

Dyson was found shot in a parking lot next to an after hours club he had been in, inside Table 9 Cafe.

It's not the first violent crime to happen there. ”It happens so many times I don't know how they are still there,” commented Frank Rodriguez, Manager at Monte Carlo Pizza.

Monte Carlo Pizza is on the other side of Cameron Street from Table 9 Café.

He says in the 23 years they've been there, they've never had a problem with violence. But because they are so close to the after hours club, they are inevitably linked to it.

“Of course I am, it happens across the street but we have the name Monte Carlo because we are a landmark, nothing ever happened here just across the street,” Rodriguez addressed,

He's not alone, the owner of El Churros closes before the club even opens at 2 a.m., but he's still aware of the threat.

“Because they have the guns they can shoot anybody,” commented Sergo Becerr.

Residents too want more security at the club.

One resident says the violence makes her think twice about coming to the area.

“It depends if I’m around at that time, it would probably prevent me from coming out because I wouldn't know what would happen,” stated Mashiyn Queen. “If I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

But still, Rodriguez says he doesn't want to see the club shut down, he just wants it to be safer.

“I don't really want to see nobody out of business, got to have more security or something,” Rodriguez told us.

Harrisburg Police Department is looking into the after hours club.

Country music community mourning death of music star Mindy McCready

Country music star Mindy McCready was found dead on Sunday afternoon, from an apparent suicide, at her Arkansas home.  McCready's speedy rise in the mid ninties, was followed by years of alcohol abuse and "run-ins" with the law.

Her death has sent shockwaves through the country music community and a reminder that fame isn't for everyone.

McCready's death comes just weeks after, David Wilson the late singers boyfriend and father of her 10-month-old son, was believe to have "killed himself."

Wilson's body was found on the same porch that officials found McCready's body.

McCready was a star at just 18.  Her debut album "Ten Thousand Angels" rose to the top of the billboard charts.  But it was all downhill from there.

The singer faced stints in and out of jail and rehab for alcohol abuse.  It was even rumored she had an affair with pitching legend Roger Clemens.

"It was a shock to hear it yet, when i heard it, she was so troubled you weren't totally shocked to hear the news," Said Rick Sten from WCAT-FM.

Even McCready herself, in an interview from 2010, had to address reports that she was trying to kill herself, saying "Oh I want to die."

McCready leaves behind a ten-month-old son and a nine-year-old son.  Sten says, that's the worst part.  "They're on their own right now."

Even Celebrity Rehab's Dr. Drew chimed in.  He treated her on the show and says her fear of the "stigma" of "seeking" help, is why she's no longer with us today.

The past weekend in Lancaster City was a violent one. There was a shooting, stabbing, two assaults and more violence.

Early Saturday morning, police were conducting a normal check at The Village when a fight broke out inside the night club.

Officers entered the bar and discovered tables and bottles being thrown, and requested help to the scene.

Police arrested Tyree Eatmon and charged him with simple assault and disorderly conduct after he struck an employee in the back of the head with a wooden table. The employee was not seriously injured.

Police also charged Jeremiha Hunter, 25 of Hanover, with public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

No one was seriously injured in the brawl.

Later Saturday evening, Police were called to the Friendly Greek Bar for a large fight. Two women, Carmen Bonilla and Evelyn Garcia, were arrested for badly beating a man and woman. Both of the victims had to be rushed to the hospital.

Also Saturday night, a fight broke out at a baby shower at the Brunswick Hotel, which has had its fair share of issues over the years. One person was stabbed in the incident, although it is unknown who the suspect was because the victim was not cooperative.

Also Saturday evening, police responded to a report of shots fired at the Bird’s Nest Night Club on Prince Street.

They found a 23-year-old who had been shot in the back and rushed him to the hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Several people at the Bird’s Nest scene were interviewed, and Dana Johnson Jr. was arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver cocaine.

“When you get large groups of people consuming large amounts of alcohol, sometimes this is the end result,” commented Lancaster Police Lieutenant Todd Umstead. “People get nasty and get violent. It’s an unfortunate thing. We want people to come to Lancaster City and have a good time. If people want to come here and make trouble, stay home.”

If you have any information on any of these incidents, you are asked to call the Lancaster City Police Department at 717-735-3300.

Driving just 30 miles away could save you as much as 20 cents a gallon in gas

$

We've all been forced to find ways to deal with high gas prices.

But lately, many are noticing a deep difference in prices at stations in neighboring counties.

People were telling us about a difference between York and Harrisburg and Gas Buddy confirms there is one. It says prices are about ten cents less per gallon in parts of York County.

Donna Ruth just drove to York from Harrisburg, there she saw both $3.69 and $3.79, but in York, “$3.59 that's why I stopped!”

Gasbuddy.com says prices in Harrisburg are sitting around $3.79, but lists York at $3.61.

“It doesn't make sense, it shouldn’t be higher 30 to 35 miles away,” Donna told us.

While AAA says prices have jumped 20 cents in the last month, we are actually down three cents from last year.

Triple A experts predict prices everywhere will keep climbing through April and May, but we won't hit the four dollar mark unless there are any unexpected late winter storms.

Still, that's not enough for some.

Even the promise of cheaper prices a county over isn't enough to take the sting out of filling up.

“It’s too much, it definitely helps but I just fill up whenever I have to,” commented Mitchell.

“You almost have to fill up when u got to, but I do look for lower prices,” concluded Donna.
