LANCASTER -- It's the courtship that led to an extraordinary proposal on a basketball court.
Lancaster Bible College senior guard Lauren Heliger is now engaged after her boyfriend popped the question on the court last week on Senior Night.
Heliger can definitely handle the rock. No one has scored more baskets at Lancaster Bible College than her. Not this season. Not ever.
Now she's playing around with another rock -- a shiny diamond engagement ring.
The star basketball player getting engaged during the season is interesting. How the love of her life popped the question is the bigger story.
"Honestly, like a few months ago, this is how I wanted him to propose to me," said Heliger, who's averaged 16.5 ppg. and was recently named the region's co-player of the year. "Never said it (to him, though)."
She'll never have to, either.
Heliger's boyfriend, Andrew Turner, came up with an idea to propose to her on Senior Night. During the ceremony after 62-34 win over Penn State Abington on February 13, Turner presented her with a special basketball that had two small, but life-changing words written on it.
"Marry Me."
The words were easy to write -- and not hard to say, either. "I was more nervous doing in front of everyone," said Turner, who resides in Manheim.
Everyone at the gym saw one trembling hand take another.
"Our team was lined up on the baseline," recalled head coach Doug Helsel, "and we looked over and they were all crying."
A couple of Heliger's teammates knew Turner was going to propose. He also asked the school for permission and started planning his big surprise a week before. The two have been dating since last April.
He also knew what Lauren's answer would be.
He just never imagined this was also her idea of a perfect proposal.
"We had discussed the idea of getting married, so I was pretty sure she would say, 'yes,'" he said. "I had that going for me."
"I like how he took both my loves and mixed the two together in one night for me," added Heliger, who attended Berks Christian High School in Reading.
Heliger has added a piece of net to her collection, as well. Lancaster Bible College won its first NCCAA East Region title since 2002-03 with a 77-60 win Wednesday over Valley Forge Christian. Heliger led the team with 23 points and six assists.
The star player now has to handle two rocks: a ball and a ring.
It’s a basketball story she'll be able to tell forever.
