Suspect involved in fire hydrant hit and run arrested

Silver Spring Township Police have identified the suspect involved in the hit and run crash that knocked a fire hydrant off its location.

The accident occurred on Monday morning when a tractor trailer hit the fire hydrant around 630 a.m. and then fled the scene.

The fire hydrant’s internal parts were badly damaged. However, United Water was able to fix it and place it back in service.

No one lost water service, despite almost 200,000 gallons of water leaking.

When fire hydrants are damaged, water is lost at a high rate. During winter, this water can freeze, creating dangerous conditions on streets and sidewalks.

Tampering with a fire hydrant is a federal offense and it is important that if you accidentally damage a hydrant you report it to emergency officials as soon as possible.

The Dauphin County Elections Board has approved polling place changes in Susquehanna and Swatara Townships.

More than 5,000 Susquehanna Township residents should be on the look out for new voter registration cards being mailed to them, according to the Dauphin County Board of Elections. New cards will be mailed by Thursday, Feb. 21, and will inform each voter of his or her new ward and polling place.

Based on the 2010 U.S. Census, the Susquehanna Township Board of Commissioners filed a reapportioned map designating new boundaries for its nine wards. As a result of this action, the Dauphin County Board of Elections moved to realign voting districts to mirror the new ward boundaries.

The county’s election district changes were approved by Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Bernard Coates and the Pennsylvania Department of State.

The Board of Elections also approved a package of polling places for the nine wards.

While the polling locations will remain the same, the selection of two polling places have been switched based on the redrawn ward lines. Residents of the newly-drawn Second Ward now will vote in the Pheasant Hill Estates Community Center, 4400 Pheasant Hill Rd., just off North Progress Avenue and Linglestown Road; residents of the newly-drawn Eight Ward now will vote at the Susquehanna Township Municipal Building, at 1900 Linglestown Rd.

In related action, 54 residents of Penbrook Borough will receive updated voter registration cards based on a reapportioned map approved by Penbrook Borough Council. All four wards of Penbrook will continue to vote at the Municipal Building at 150 S. 28th St.

In other related action, the polling place for Swatara Township’s Sixth Ward was moved to Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 165 N. 67th St. The Board of Elections approved the move after receiving a petition from registered voters from the ward.

York County Prison inmates claim to be Jewish for meals

YORK, Pa. (AP) — Officials at a central Pennsylvania prison say some inmates are falsely claiming to be Jewish in order to get kosher meals.

Warden Mary Sabol says that has led to a dramatic spike in food costs at the York County Prison.

County acting solicitor Donald Reihart says officials must honor valid religious conversions. But he says that's not the case with many inmates.

Reihart says some prisoners game the system because they think kosher meals taste better than regular ones. Officials dispute any quality difference.

A prison spokesman says kosher meals are prepared outside the facility while regular ones are made on-site. The type of food varies on a pre-set schedule.

The prison has about 2,300 inmates. According to the York Daily Record (http://bit.ly/VKMzFz), more than 140 are requesting kosher meals.

She can handle the rock: basketball star gets engaged on court

$

LANCASTER -- It's the courtship that led to an extraordinary proposal on a basketball court.

Lancaster Bible College senior guard Lauren Heliger is now engaged after her boyfriend popped the question on the court last week on Senior Night.

Heliger can definitely handle the rock. No one has scored more baskets at Lancaster Bible College than her. Not this season. Not ever.

Now she's playing around with another rock -- a shiny diamond engagement ring.

The star basketball player getting engaged during the season is interesting. How the love of her life popped the question is the bigger story.

"Honestly, like a few months ago, this is how I wanted him to propose to me," said Heliger, who's averaged 16.5 ppg. and was recently named the region's co-player of the year. "Never said it (to him, though)."

She'll never have to, either.

Heliger's boyfriend, Andrew Turner, came up with an idea to propose to her on Senior Night. During the ceremony after 62-34 win over Penn State Abington on February 13, Turner presented her with a special basketball that had two small, but life-changing words written on it.

"Marry Me."

The words were easy to write -- and not hard to say, either. "I was more nervous doing in front of everyone," said Turner, who resides in Manheim.

Everyone at the gym saw one trembling hand take another.

"Our team was lined up on the baseline," recalled head coach Doug Helsel, "and we looked over and they were all crying."

A couple of Heliger's teammates knew Turner was going to propose. He also asked the school for permission and started planning his big surprise a week before. The two have been dating since last April.

He also knew what Lauren's answer would be.

He just never imagined this was also her idea of a perfect proposal.

"We had discussed the idea of getting married, so I was pretty sure she would say, 'yes,'" he said. "I had that going for me."

"I like how he took both my loves and mixed the two together in one night for me," added Heliger, who attended Berks Christian High School in Reading.

Heliger has added a piece of net to her collection, as well. Lancaster Bible College won its first NCCAA East Region title since 2002-03 with a 77-60 win Wednesday over Valley Forge Christian. Heliger led the team with 23 points and six assists.

The star player now has to handle two rocks: a ball and a ring.

It’s a basketball story she'll be able to tell forever.

UPDATE:

New Kingstown Fire Chief Curt Hall says that the fire has been ruled accidental

The fire company met with the PSP Fire Marshal when he arrived on scene and they determined the fire started in the area of the furnace.

It is believed that the furnace, which used fuel oil, was the cause of the fire.
______________________________________

A fire broke out Thursday morning at an auto body shop in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County.

Police say the blaze broke out around 7:30 on the 1100 block of West Trindle Road at Starting Line Auto Body.

Over fifty-five firefighters responded to the scene, and tankers were brought in because there wasn't a close enough water supply to fight the flames.

Freezing temperatures didn't play a factor on fighting the blaze, and a heated tent was set up for firefighters standing by.

It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control, and New Kingstown Fire Chief Curt Hall says hard working volunteer firefighters made that possible.  "Volunteer firefighters are hard workers. There's not too many people that want to stand in the tent when there's work to be done, so we had a good crew of personnel working today. The fire was under control quickly, and no injuries at this time."

No one was in the auto body shop at the time the fire broke out. The cause is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal.

UPDATE:

From CBS News.

(CBS News) Last month, "CBS This Morning" aired an investigation into the power wheelchair industry.

Are power wheelchair companies ripping off the government?

Critics say it's putting seniors in costly equipment they don't need, and ripping off the government for what may be hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Now law enforcement is taking action.

On Wednesday, 150 federal and state agents raided The SCOOTER Store headquarters in New Braunfels, Texas, and agents remain on the site. CBS News just spoke to an FBI agent Thursday morning who said workers will not be allowed back into headquarters through the day as the nation's largest power wheelchair company remains under investigation.

The agents came from the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services, the FBI, and the Texas Attorney General. They held some workers back for interviews and told others to leave the building immediately, and leave their desks alone.
