There have been at least six bear sightings in Lower Paxton Township over the past two weeks, as recent as Tuesday night and now police are asking residents to be aware of their surroundings.
The most recent sighting was off of Blue Ribbon Avenue, which is near Interstate 81. Neighbors saw it in the evening and say that it simply was just lounging around before it walked away.
"It didn't bother anybody or anything, it was just laying in the grass relaxing and then got up and moseyed on to the next yard," explained Dawanne Fields.
Fields saw the black bear Tuesday night when she went outside to smoke.
"It was, it was big, it was pretty big," Fields replied when asked how big the bear was.
Over the past two weeks there have been numerous bear sightings in Lower Paxton Township, and Dawanna isn't surprised.
"They were here first, we tore down these trees and all of this stuff and put these houses here," understands Fields.
Still, the fact that bears are walking around where kids play concerns those who live here.
"They're huge, you know, they could crush me just with a slap,” Fields continued. “It's scary."
With so many wooded areas, a bear could be in your backyard behind a tree and you may not even know it!
The Game Commission says that to prevent bears from hanging out in your yard, take down any bird feeders and if you see a bear, give the game commission a call.
*Note - the pictured bear is not the same as the one that has been spotted.
