PITTSBURGH (AP) — Police say a West Virginia woman may have tried to smother her 4-month-old son more than a dozen times, including twice inside a Pittsburgh hospital.
Investigators say 22-year-old Rachel Nelson faces aggravated assault and other charges after allegedly trying to smother her son twice last week at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Nelson, of Costa, W.Va., was charged Wednesday. Police say she'll be arrested after she's released following a psychiatric evaluation.
Pittsburgh police Lt. Kevin Kraus says Nelson may have tried to suffocate the boy up to 15 times since August. The baby was treated at a Charleston, W.Va. hospital six times after he turned blue and had to be resuscitated.
Court records don't list an attorney for Nelson. Her son is listed in stable condition.
