Rising water in Manheim Borough forced the evacuation of nearly a half dozen families who live near Chickies Creek, which is above flood stage.
When the rain began to fall yesterday, no one was really sure how badly it would affect all the small creeks in the area. Well, Chickies Creek stayed low for much of the day and then just shot up.
One family was evacuated from their home early this morning. The firemen carried the dogs and young children as the parents’ held onto the rope. A mandatory evacuation was not issued for the houses at the intersection of Mill and Hazel Streets in Manheim Borough. They really got caught off guard when the water rose so quickly and the families had to call for help. And when it does get this bad, it’s recommended you always call for help.
Dan Wagner: Manheim Fire Dept.
“Do not get out on your own. Call for help. That is what we are here for. You do not want to get out on your own. One foot of water will take you down. The high, swift water will take you down.”
All the families that evacuated went to stay with family.
