One of the biggest issues that Sandy brought to Central Pennsylvania was the high winds – and in Dover Township, a directional wind was so strong that many believe it could have been a tornado.
Gene Whitecamp lives in Dover Township, and thinks a tornado touched down during Sandy Monday night. “About 9 o’clock I was watching TV and it sounded like a freight train was comin – then all of the sudden it went boom.”
The boom that Gene Whitecamp is referring to is a strong gust of wind that knocked this home off of it’s foundation. “All day long I mean it was windy – it wasn’t all that bad as far as that goes, I’ve been through worse, but you know, all of the sudden in two minutes then it got bad real quick.”
Because the wind was so strong in such a short period of time, originally authorities believed it could have been a tornado. “First thing that hit me I thought tornado. Nah – it’s not that.” Whitecamp said.
The Fire Department in Dover Township said at this point they have not contacted the National Weather Service to see if it was a tornado – but they do believe a strong directional wind caused the damage in this neighborhood.
“They got skirting up off their trailers and – not quite as bad as right here, I guess this hit it direct.” Whitecamp said.
When neighbors saw the damage, they weren’t sure what to do. “Now what do we do? Do we report this, or what? We all said – I don’t know, so we didn’t.”
This damage was eventually reported by some of the neighbors – but the York County Office of Emergency Management is asking all residents to report any damage they see so they can fully asses how much damage this storm caused.
