Police are on the search for a car that hit and killed a woman in Harrisburg Wednesday morning, then fled the scene.
Local residents say that this is a busy area and they're concerned for their children's safety.
The accident happened on the corner of 13th and Sycamore Street and people who live in the area say that people always drive over the speed limit and sometimes fail to stop for pedestrians.
Around 8:40 a.m., a woman was hit and killed by a car while trying to cross the street.
“She was hit by a vehicle, my understanding is there is at least one witness and whatever vehicle hit her left the scene,” explained Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick.
Harrisburg Police and the Dauphin County Coroner responded to the scene and say that a female in her late teens or early 20’s was killed, and at this time they don’t have any definitive information on the vehicle that hit her.
“From what I heard I do believe the cross walk sign was on as she was crossing the street,” explained Darryl Richardson. “The vehicle did not see her while it was coming up, flying around here, and this is a very dangerous and very busy intersection.”
“She did have a hoodie on,” Hetrick added. “I don’t know what her visibility was like, but I do know that somebody didn’t stop.”
Currently, Traffic Safety Unit Officers are investigating the incident but because the woman had no identification on her, they have been unable to identify her up to this point.
Now even though there are walk signals and there are buttons to press to let you cross the street, people say it’s still dangerous and sometimes cars just don’t stop.
“Sometimes I have to backup cause sometimes they won’t stop,” commented Faith Coburn, who lives nearby. Coburn lives on the corner of 13th and Sycamore and says that she’s worried that this will happen again.
“I take my son across the street to the day care and I have to stand right here for like 10-15 minutes to cross the street for it to be safe when I know I can cross the street,” Coburn continued.
Foose School sits on the corner of this intersection, and even though they have a crossing guard on 13th Street, Faith says it’s not enough.
“There’s a cross guard right in the middle of the street for the school but there’s no cross guard right here by Sycamore Street and all these cars, it’s dangerous and there’s no crossing guard. The street’s dangerous,” Coburn advised.
“Just pay attention to your surroundings, slow down, you will get where you need to go,” Richardson told drivers.
Police say there was at least one witness on scene and they are currently investigating to see if they can find the person who hit the woman.
If you have any information about this fatal hit-and-run accident, you’re asked to call Harrisburg Police.
