Dauphin County Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) has assumed responsibility for dispatching Middletown Police as of 7 a.m. today. Middletown requested this transfer of responsibility in order to save an estimated $300,000 annually.
DEMA assumed responsibility for dispatch following 4 months of planning, including training of Middletown police personnel on the equipment and protocols of DEMA dispatch. On average, Middletown experiences 125 police incidents monthly.
No additional personnel or equipment was required by DEMA to assume this responsibility. In 2011, DEMA answered more than 400,000 calls. DEMA is the only recognized Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in Dauphin County.
Middletown residents are reminded to always dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. For non-emergency police assistance residents should still call the Middletown Police Department at 717-948-3000.
