Early Friday morning, Northern York Police were alerted to a stolen tractor trailer. The truck, a white Volvo with a silver gasoline tanker, both belonged to Edris Oil.
The truck’s operator advised he had just hooked up to the trailer and walked into the office. When he came back out, the truck and trailer were gone.
Officers spotted the trailer traveling west on East Seventh Avenue only minutes later. When they attempted to stop it, the driver refused to stop and kept going.
The chase led onto North George Street, where two additional police officers were headed toward the truck. The driver left his lane and headed straight for the two police cars. Officers had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.
The driver did obey a stop light at Route 30, but as officers approached, the driver, Marc CJ Chartier of Manitoba, Canada, took off again.
From there the chase continued on Route 30, but Chartier did not stop for several red lights, instead just laying on his horn.
As Chartier and the runaway truck approached the Route 30 and Route 462 split, he attempted to take the 462 ramp and lost control of the tractor trailer, striking a guard rail.
Chariter refused to obey police commands and had to be removed from the cab of the vehicle. He was taken to York Hospital for minor injuries.
Once released, he was taken to Central Booking and arraigned on theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, fleeing or attempting to elude police, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, DUI and various traffic violations.
