She was struck and killed by a Harrisburg police officer Thursday morning.
Friday, the family of Shulena Weldon is honoring her memory and talking about the adversity she overcame after being struck by a truck as a child.
“Shulena was in an accident before years ago,” stated her step-dad, Robert Brown. Brown is the man Weldon called dad, the man who raised her and stood by her side for more than 25 years.
He also watched out for her and helped her to overcome injuries from being struck by a truck as a child.
“Shulena is a person who rolls out of tragedy, she had before,” Brown explained.. “And to see a victim to such an accident, the doctor said she wouldn't speak or walk but her mom said not so.”
She did learn to walk and talk again and while she didn't have any kids of her own, family and friends say she mothered the kids in the community and inspired them to enjoy life.
“She would wear long Cinderella dresses and bring a big basket and lead kids up and down the street and then she'd do a ballet dance for them and tell them I'll pass out candy to the kids,” her family told us.
Her aunt says as she got the call Thursday morning telling Shulena was killed, she says she immediately had flashbacks to when her niece was a little girl.
“The first thing that came to my mind is when she was a child she was already in an accident and survived it,” the aunt recalled. “Ironic she didn't survive this one.”
Everyone who knew Weldon says she was a beam of light and loved living every minute to the fullest.
“She knew the value of life because it was almost taken from her,” concluded her family.
