The Cumberland County attorney representing convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky will represent disenfranchised Carlisle tax collector George Hicks Jr. in a court appearance Monday. The 21-year-old is hoping a county judge will permit him to return to his duties that were stripped from him this week following his arrest on drug charges.
George Hicks, Junior was only in his eighth month as Carlisle tax collector when he was arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover cop on two different occasions within three days. Calling it an issue of public trust, the district obtained a temporary injunction preventing him from serving in the capacity of tax collector.
At the time of his arrest, Hicks was quite adamant that he had been set up by police. He admitted he used marijuana for medicinal purposes, but never in the tax office.
Friday, defense attorney Karl Rominger of Carlisle announced he will represent Hicks on Monday, hoping to get the injunction lifted.
In court documents, Rominger, who also represents Jerry Sandusky, said younger in check drug use is not reason to remove one from elected office. He said most if not all of the last few modern US presidents has imbibed or ingested marijuana if not cocaine and the use of marijuana does not necessarily render one unfit for public office.
The hearing to decide whether Hicks can resume the role of Carlisle Borough tax collector is set for Monday morning. It will be heard before Judge Christie Lee Peck. Earlier this week District Attorney David Freed says he's sure the judge will do what's in the best interest of the taxpayers.
