You know them, but apparently you don't love them enough anymore.
Hostess Brands, the makers of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, has announced they are going out business.
It is a combination of slowing demand and a long struggle with one of its largest unions, which for now is putting over 18,000 workers out of work and is making the famous comfort foods history.
Our quest for Twinkies began at Giant, but there weren't any there, a manager told us they no longer carried the brand. Then on to Karns’ where we were sure the brand lived on, nope. Mike the manager told us it had been about two years since the everlasting sponge cakes were in his store.
Hostess Brands 33 bakeries had been sending 500 million Twinkies and 127 million loaves of Wonder Bread annually out across the nation, but they haven't had much of an recent impact in our area.
“It's very upsetting, very upsetting to me,” commented Laszlo Topes, who blames the union.
Our Twinkie quest took us to Sheetz, same result, we tried even a smaller store, where there had been at least one Twinkie craver.
It seems that while Twinkies will be remembered, they won't really be missed. Maybe you still have a few left over from your childhood?
“No I'm sure they are all gone by now,” commented one person.
“I don't eat Twinkies too much, I like their Ho-Ho's though,” added another.
Uhoh, Ho-Ho's will be gone too, but for those who are upset over the death of Twinkies?
“No I'm not, I never liked 'em,” laughed one person.
“We used to bury them in the snow,” chuckled another.
“I never ate them, but it is kind of a bummer, a lot of jobs will be gone,” believes Kendar Behrens.
A key problem for the whole snack cake industry is over capacity. According to the Hostess Brands CEO, it is too late for his company even if the union agreed to more cuts.
Hostess will now sell its assets so it's not inconceivable that the cake that lasts forever, could one day return.
The reason we're at Wal-Mart is that we have found they do have Twinkies, in case you want to stock up for the next couple of decades.
